HCC pushes all-natural attractions

Natural finishing of lamb on grass in Wales could give the country an advantage in the current climate of rising feed costs, according to Michael Rees-Thomas of HCC - Meat Promotion Wales.

Speaking at Anuga, Rees-Thomas said the main point of discussion at the show was the rising feed prices. "It's scaring everyone," he said. "I've been in the industry all my life, and I've not known a situation like this. Food prices will have to go up."

However, he said, in countries like Wales, where the finishing of lambs is on grass, there were opportunities to cut out costs. "If something is too expensive, you don't use it," he said. "In Wales, if we use our heads, it's something we can champion - in season, we can do the job as well as anybody else in

the world."

He said the rising costs could see a shift back to more seasonal food production, although he acknowledged that could lead to knock-on problems for the processing sectors on economies of scale.

HCC also used the event to showcase its products, running its latest television adverts on its stand, along with a 12-minute film in German, promoting Wales.
