Something new for Sainsbury's

 - Published:  30 July, 2007

Sainsbury's was on hand at the Royal Welsh Show last week in a bid to attract new and different suppliers to its shelves.

The retailer's Supply Something New roadshow arrived at the showground last Thursday and met with six different suppliers. The scheme sees a team from Sainsbury's hit the road each month in search of new and innovative products.

Among the suppliers pitching to the retailer at the show was Rhug, an organic pie producer, from Denbighshire, North Wales and the Llandudno Smokery, a company specialising in smoked meat, game fish and poultry products.

The retailer said that, so far, more than 25 suppliers had achieved a successful listing from the scheme, including Higgidy Pies, a Brighton based pie producer.

A spokesman said: "The Supply Something New scheme recognises many customers want to buy food, grown or reared, which reflects regional tastes and traditions and that buying from smaller suppliers can also help stimulate the rural economy.

"The panel are looking for products that have a point of difference, an interesting heritage and, most importantly, taste good."
