Harwood highlights worries
John Harwood, of the FSA, took the opportunity of his impending retirement to highlight some personal thoughts during the BMPA conference.
He said the conference was his last opportunity to address the industry before his retirement next year, and questioned why the slaughtering and meat processing sector was more heavily regulated than the food processing sector.
"Why does the preparation of complex ready-meals take place with the manufacturer taking full responsibility for the safety of the product, while for the slaughter and cutting of meat, the state actively supervises the process?"
He also questioned the sustainability of the meat industry, which he described as a conundrum. "The industry has been very successful in providing available and affordable meat. But livestock contributes 18% of the warming effect to global warming."
