Animal expert to speak at EBLEX conference
The world's leading animal handling specialist will be the keynote speaker at an EBLEX beef better returns programme event in Stratford-upon-Avon in May.
Dr Temple Grandin is professor of animal science at Colorado state university. She has designed and installed handling facilities in markets, feedlots and abattoirs worldwide and was voted one of the most influential people in the beef industry in 2004.
She is a world-renowned expert who has advised some of the largest global meat processors and manufacturers.
Dr Phil Hadley, regional manager for EBLEX, said: "This is a real coup for EBLEX. Temple Grandin very rarely speaks to UK audiences and this is a unique opportunity for English producers to hear her thoughts and learn about her experience to get the most from their animals," he added.
The event is free to all English producers signed up to the better returns programme and will be held on Friday 18 May at Walton Hall, Stratford-upon-Avon.
The programme includes: Dr Paul Warriss, from the division of animal food science at the university of Bristol, on the effect of stress and handling on the value of meat; Dr Jonathon Birnie, group agricultural research manager from Dunbia, on handling practice and its relation to throughput and product quality and Matthew Howe, the senior vice president of McDonalds, on the importance of welfare and the response of consumers.
The event will be chaired by Warwickshire beef producer Adam Quinney.
Quinney said: "I have adopted Temple Grandin's designs on my own farm and they have made a tremendous difference to the way I handle my animals, and the potential for better returns.
"I am delighted that Dr Grandin is coming to the West Midlands to give producers her latest thoughts on animal handling. This really is a 'must attend' event for forward-thinking beef producers."
