Farmers Given Tips on Business Efficiency
Beef and sheep producers from across the UK were presented with information and advice from industry experts about ways to improve business efficiency at the first ever EBLEX national producer conference.
Delegates at the event, held at Askham Bryan College in York, were given guidance about what buyers wanted from farmers; opportunities in the export market; ways to improve the financial side of the business and the benefits of creating a brand for beef and lamb.
Speaking at the event, chairman of EBLEX, John Cross, said: "Today is a conference with a difference. It has a clear aim - to ensure everyone seated here today takes home at least one idea that will make a real difference back on the farm."
Speakers included Richard Phelps, managing director of Southern Counties Fresh Foods; Peter Hardwick, MLC exports; Geoff Hall, regional agricultural manager, Lloyds TSB and Matt Wyatt, director of planning, Leo Burnett.
Farmers also had the chance to take part in a series of workshops at the college, including EBLEX Better Returns cattle and lamb selection demonstrations, looking at farm costings and a butchery demonstration.
Addressing delegates, Cross said: "In today's global beef and lamb market, English producers are coming under enormous pressure on a number of fronts - on farmgate prices, the environment, animal welfare and the ever-increasing burden of red tape."
He added it was the job of EBLEX to focus on delivering continuous business improvement to producers to help ensure their businesses were better able to withstand marketplace challenges.
