Argentinean exporters are keen to work with the UK industry in a bid to meet consumer demand for beef.

With Argentinean government export restrictions being eased, the country's industry is keen to re-establish itself in its export markets.

Arturo Llavallo, president of the Argentine Beef Promotion Institute (IPCV), said: "We're seeing demand for beef increasing and production is getting lower. There's a deficit in Europe and other parts of the world. A country like Argentina can provide that beef."

Llavallo said the industry was working hard to increase its production in a bid to satisfy domestic demand, while still providing for exports. "We're working with producers, trying to give them the technology they need to increase production. It's not just about increasing the number of cows, it's about getting a better yield from the cows we have."

Production has increased - in 2004, Argentina produced 3mt, in 2005 it was up to 3.17mt. Llavallo said the country would be looking to build on its historical links with the UK. But he wants to come into the market in a sympathetic manner, he stressed: "We don't want to compete, we want to complement the production in the UK. The UK has problems, production is reducing and we can supplement the UK supply to satisfy the consumer."
