Cutting red tape, legislative treatment, the importance of not giving away the meat industry to non-EU producers during the next round of WTO talks are issues that the UK government needed to address, said Allan Jess, president of the Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers who opened the UECBV conference.
"Currently we're fighting new legislative battles in relation to dealing with tallow, mince, the movement of bone-in-beef from cattle aged 24-30 months and a lot more," he said. He was pleased that many of the points are being argued and taken forward by UECBV at European level, especially as government and political leaders come and go. "The downside of such structures is that people like us have to keep explaining what we do and how we do it - more crucially how we'd like to do it - to new leaders, new officials and new law makers."
