European event set for Scotland debut

The European Livestock and Meat Trading Union, UECBV, is to hold a meat conference in the UK for the first time on 29 September in Edinburgh.

Conference delegates, drawn from all EU member states, have selected Agriculture & World and Food Safety as keynote subjects.

"It's a honour for Edinburgh to be selected as the host venue for an event of such international status, especially at a time when our own meat industry is rebuilding export business and restoring trade links across Europe," said Allan Jess, president of the Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers, co-hosts of the conference with the BMPA, IMTA and the Northern Ireland Meat Exporter's Association (NIMEA).

The Agriculture and World Trade session, chaired by Allan Jess, will feature presentations by Lars Hoelgaard, deputy director of DG Agriculture, Peter Hardwick, MLC, and John Kinnaird, president of NFU Scotland.

The Food Safety debate, chaired by Gerry Finley, president of the BMPA will include an EU perspective from Colm Gaynor, director, food and veterinary office DG Sanco, UK/Scottish perspective from Charles Milne, chief veterinary officer Scotland, a UK retail perspective from Chris Brown, agriculture manager at Asda, and a by-products assessment by NC Leth Neilsen, president of the European Fat Processors & Renderers Association.

The conference venue is Edinburgh's Radisson Hotel.
