WITH 30 products already through to the final of this year's SuperMeat Awards attention is now focused on the judging of stores. Consumer judges, under the adjudication of Meat Trades Journal advisor Fred A'Court, are visiting stores as far afield as Perth in Scotland, Swansea in Wales and Newton Abbot in Devon to find the stores best serving the needs of customers. Meat, poultry and fish departments are being assessed along with meat and fish counters.
The stores are being judged on a range of criteria, including quality of displays, staff knowledge, appearance and teamwork, product quality, back-of-store organisation and efficiency, and the contribution made to local communities. Best stores in Scotland, Wales and four regions of England will be chosen with one winning the coveted best overall store title. A'Court said: "It's been noticeable this year when visiting stores how much emphasis is being placed on freshness, a reflection perhaps of the growing awareness of this in the minds of shoppers. Consequently the consistency and quality of meat and fish counter products and displays is the best yet seen." Consumer judges are largely drawn from members of the National Federation of Women's Institute. Organised by the Journal, the SuperMeat Awards final takes place at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London on Wednesday 21 June. During the evening the Red Meat Industry Forum (RMIF) will announce its second Award for Supply Chain Excellence.
Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose are participating in this year's Awards with Bord Bia, BPEX, Danish Bacon and Meat Council, EBLEX, Hybu Cig Cymru, RMIF and the Vion Food Group sponsoring the evening.
