FOOD INDUSTRY training consultancy Verner Wheelock Associates (VWA) is to hold two one-day conferences on Healthy Eating in Schools during March 2006. The prime objective of these conferences will be to share the knowledge and expertise that already exists. They will help schools decide on what action needs to be taken in order to satisfy the OFSTED requirements on healthy eating.
Speakers range from parents and headteachers who have changed eating habits in their schools, to an OFSTED Inspector and representatives from local authority catering services. The conferences are aimed at anyone involved in promoting Healthy Eating in Schools and will be of interest to, caterers, health promotion professionals and food companies who supply schools. The fi rst will be on Thursday 9 March at Askham Bryan College, York and the second will be at Buile Hill Park Hall, Salford on Monday 27 March.

Welsh lamb journeys to Roman schools
Protected geographical Indicator status lamb from Wales is being exported to Italy as part an initiative to improve school meals in Rome. The scheme covers the whole of Rome, where organic/ PGI 140,000 school meals are served every day. Each meal costs the equivalent of €2.89 per child, far more than the UK spend on schools, according to Kevin Morgan, professor of European Regional Development at Cardiff University.
"The notion of best value has been calculated in a totally different way from that used in the UK, adopting a wider notion of 'educational value' that is not just focused on cost, but also concerned with nutrition and culture," said Mr Morgan.
The PGI Welsh lamb, supplied by St Merryn Food, part of Grampian, was served as part of the menu because taste tests had shown that Roman children preferred its fl avour. Rome has invested €166 million in a centralised school meal service.
