Mercury presses into new services
Innovative technology has meant a packaging company has rolled out the barrel into the frozen and chilled sectors, among others, in its expanding portfolio.
Mercury Packaging bought a £1.3m eight-colour Uteco Onyx flexographic gearless print press at its facility in Nottingham, which has opened up a new chapter in the company's nine-year history, as the firm is now able to develop printed films for the food industry approved by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and the Packaging Society (IoP).
Mercury director Mike Barlow said: "The new print capability will also help us move into the food industry, which is fundamental to our future growth. Most importantly, though, the installation reflects our continued commitment to delivering the service levels and technical excellence required by blue-chip customers across all market sectors."
With the new printer, Mercury is now able to make laminates and bags for the frozen, chilled and fresh produce sectors. "Bringing printing in-house was a natural next step following our expansion into larger premises a couple of years ago. We had enough work to justify the investment and decided to go for it. Once full, it should increase our turnover by 50%," added Barlow.
Mercury Packaging achieved BRC/IoP accreditation for its food packaging in 2007 and, with a current turnover of £5m, the company hopes the new printer will take it forward into new business opportunities.
