Buckwells takes top award

Buckwells impressed judges for the event, organised by the Guild of Q Butchers, with its lamb saddle au poire - a boned saddle of lamb stuffed with a mix of pear flavoured sausage meat.

The product beat off strong competition from almost 400 entries to the event, which aims to highlight excellence within the guild's members.

John Buckwell, of Buckwells of Southsea, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to win the supreme award. We normally do well in product evaluation but this is the pinnacle and a wonderful promotional opportunity in the run up to Christmas."

John, who also took the diamond award for best Christmad product, was presented with his awards by celebrity chef Ian Rankin at a lunch and awards ceremony at Butcher's Hall this week.

Other diamond award winners on the day included Allan Bennett of Codsall, who took the sausage category with his pork, stilton and spring onion sausage, RT Stuart of Buckhaven for their steak, pork and onion burger, Elite Meats of Harrogate took the title in cooked meats with their rare roast Highland beef, Cranstons of Cumbria took the bacon title with their streaky offer, Greens of Pangbourne's pork, chilli and apricot sausage roll took the pies and bakery title, while Lidgate of Holland Park took the kitchen ready category with its five spice pork spare ribs.

Special awards, sponsored by Eblex for best products made from English lamb and beef saw Elite Meats take the title for its rare roast beef and PJ Howarth & Son took the lamb category for its Cramberlamb Whirl.

The BPEX sponsored award for the best pork product went to Lidgate's pork spare ribs.
