Warning as ALF hits butcher

 - Published:  12 October, 2007

A Q-Guild butcher whose shop came under attack from the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) has warned that other North Yorkshire butchers may be at risk.

C&G Starkey in Sherburn was vandalised on 27 September. The words "ban boar meat", "no foi gras [sic]" and "ALF" were sprayed in red and white paint across the shop front.

Three other premises were attacked that night, including a duck farm nearby, where vans were sprayed with acid and their tyres slashed. "When we came to work in the morning the whole shop front was covered in car paint, which is almost impossible to get off. It took me nearly four hours to remove it," said owner Cyril Starkey. "We called the local police who said that they were treating it as a terrorist attack and the crime squad came to examine the scene."

According to Cyril, the police believe that the ALF are targeting butchers across North Yorkshire and are getting the addresses of butchers that sell boar meat and foie gras from the Q-Guild website.

"Butchers need to be aware of this threat," said Cyril. "There are several other Q-Guild butchers in the area and I would hate for them to be in the same boat."

Luckily, the attack has not affected business and customers have spoken out in support of the shop.
