Kenyan abattoir re-opens

The main slaughterhouse in the Kenyan region struck by Rift Valley Fever (RVF) has reopened, according to a report by the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.
The Wajir and Garisa districts were struck by the zoonotic virus, which in humans causes symptoms such as fever and headache.
It can progress into a more serious disease and 1% of sufferers die. It kills significantly more livestock than this, and causes abortion in pregnant livestock.
The government has re-opened the main Mandera slaughterhouse after blood samples taken from the animals proved negative.
