Simon Howie butchers has donated over 10 tonnes of meat products to the Africa Mercy ship which is operated by the international charity Mercy Ships.

The former Danish rail ferry, Africa Mercy has been converted into a state of the art hospital and is the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship. Africa Mercy, which is due to sail on 4th May, will provide free healthcare and community development services to the poorest people of Africa. The staff at Simon Howie butchers worked unpaid to make the donation possible.

Simon Howie, who recently won Meat Trades Journal's Britain's Best Butcher award, explained: "Mercy Ships is a compassionate organisation, providing hope to thousands of people in the developing world and we are happy to contribute something to such a worthwhile cause".

Judy Polkinhorn, executive director of Mercy Ships UK, said "I actually stood and watched the foodstuffs from Simon Howie Butchers being unloaded onto the dock in Blyth. It's when you actually see that happen, and you then turn around and walk back into this newest Mercy Ships Hospital Ship, and see those giving their time on board that you realise just how important such gifts are."
