An East Yorkshire abattoir company has been given OK for a major expansion, overriding the objections of protesters.

Cranswick Country Foods can now expand and upgrade its pig slaughterhouse site at Hedon near Hull.

East Riding Council permitted the expansion plan after Cranswick agreed to a number of restrictions, especially on night time vehicle movements.

Objectors had claimed the site was unsuitable but Cranswick management said that the decision would safeguard the jobs of workers at the site.
