A Kington-based butcher who is celebrating 25 years in business has scooped first prize in both the Breakfast and Speciality categories in the Herefordshire round of the sixth West Midlands Tastiest Sausage Competition.

It is the second consecutive year that butcher, Glyn Slade-Jones, has taken both gongs in the same competition heat, being recognised ths year for his free-range Traditional Pork sausage and Flavours of Herefordshire sausage.

The third heat of the competition took place at the AGA Shop in Mill Street, Kidderminster.

The West Midlands Tastiest Sausage competition is organised by regional food group Heart of England fine foods (HEFF) in support of the Farmhouse Breakfast Week national campaign, to encourage Britain to make time for a proper, locally sourced breakfast.

The winners from the five county sizzle-offs then compete for the ultimate title in the Grand Final, to be held at the AGA Shop, Mailbox on 25 January.

Glyn's mother Marjorie Jones, who makes a range of preserves, pies, pastries for the family's shop as well as the Autumn Spirit chutney that goes into the Flavours of Herefordshire sausage was present at the AGA shop to collect the two plaques from Heart of England fine foods.

She said: "I am really chuffed that we have won two years in a row and are recognised for our great tasting, handmade products."

She added, to win the HEFF awards in 2007 was "just lovely" because the company would also be celebrating 25 years in business this year.

"Also next month we will be heading for the House of Lords for the CLA Retailer of the Year Awards where we are one of only 13 small shops nominated from across the UK. It is a very exciting time," she said.
