Green Light for Suffolk Abattoir
The future of East Anglia's countryside, livestock farming and local food systems is looking more secure with the announcement of an official decision to allow the development of a new abattoir and meat processing facilities at Eye in Suffolk.
Planning permission was initially refused for the C&K Meats abattoir at Mid Suffolk Business Park after protests by other companies that it would damage their businesses. But the planning inspectorate has upheld the appeal by the wholesale butchers so now, more than three years after C&K Meats first submitted their proposal, the new abattoir can finally go ahead.
The decision secures the jobs of more than 100 workers who currently work in an abattoir elsewhere in Suffolk.
Lady Caroline Cranbrook, chair of the East of England Grazing Forum, said: "This is the best possible news for food and farming. It has been a long campaign and a great relief that the inspector has supported C&K Meats and Lamberts planning application to relocate to Eye Airfield.
"The abattoir - the last medium-sized, multi-species facility in Suffolk, is vitally important for consumer choice, for animal welfare, for food miles and for the continued viability of livestock farming in Suffolk."
She added butchers, farm shops, farmers markets, livestock farmers, the landscape, wildlife and the livestock themselves would all benefit from the decision.
