Henderson's for sale

A Scottish family-owned meat- processing plant, officially opened by Princess Anne just over four months ago, is up for sale.

city. It employs 70 people and was expected to bring a total of 100 jobs to the area.

Permission to relocate the existing site from Braefield Road to a greenfield one at Myreside Farm, near Whitecross, was initially refused, but an appeal to the Scottish Executive resulted in Henderson's getting the go-ahead in November 2003. This allowed the family firm to sell the Braehead site, where it had been since 1973, to property developer Alloa-based MCA Homes,

Commenting on the news at the time, Scottish agriculture minister Ross Finnie said: "This is a terrific time. I'm sure it will bring bene-fits to other parts of Scotland."

There is some speculation that Irish companies may look to buy the plant, with the front runner at the moment being Dunbia, which supplies the Castle Mey range from cattle reared in Caithness.
