A butcher in Little Common, Bexhill, is joining traders and residents in opposing plans for the building of a Tesco in the Sussex village.

Betts and Lloyds butcher is petitioning Rother District Council to to oppose an application to demolish a car sales depot in Cooden Sea Road and build a Tesco store with 10 flats over it.

"The Tesco Extra will not affect our sales as it will have not a butchery department. But it will affect the stature of our village," said Geoff LLoyd, partner at Betts and LLoyds.

The new 418m2 Tesco Extra will be sited directly opposite an existing Co-op supermarket and near a small convenience store in Church Hilll

"I don't see the need for a Tesco. We are part of a businesss association and we will stand up and help other traders who in turn will help us," explained Geoff.

A spokesman for Rother District Council said the authority acknowledged the sentiments of independent traders and would re-examine the plannning application. "However the application is for a shop in a shopping zone so we may be unable to deny planning consent for a Tesco," he added.
