This year's Butchers' and Drovers' Charitable Institution annual dinner attracted 900 guests making it a record breaking year for organisers of the event.

This year's Butchers' and Drovers' Charitable Institution (BDCI) annual dinner, on Friday 3 Novenmber, attracted 900 guests making it a record breaking year for organisers of the event.

Meat industry representatives from butchers, to small and large processors, farmers and those from ancillary and support services enjoyed the meal, auction, raffle and live entertainment from comedian Tom O'Connor at London's Hilton Hotel.

More than £130,000 was raised in the raffle and charity auction, which saw the top bid come from last year's (BDCI) festival chairman, Miles Levy, who donated £15,000 for a visit for four on board a Royal Navy warship. Other bids for the 14 prizes included £6,500 for a silver plated bull and £5,500 for the order book of the Duke of Wellington's London butcher (dated 1818-1820).

This year's BDCI festival chairman, Richard Cracknell, chief executive of Anglo Beef Processors (ABP), said he had received positive feedback from the event. Speaking after the event he said: "I thought it was a wonderful evening and I am very very grateful to so many people or turning up. There was a much better turn out than there has been for many years, at least 20 years.

"I would also like to thank everybody for their generosity in the raffle and in the auction - we made £130,000 on the night and if you add in the total amount my own management team raised with their own fundraising, the total comes to about £170,000.

"It will make a big difference to so many people's lives."
