Yorkshire butchers to compete

 - Published:  20 September, 2006

Butchers across Yorkshire are being urged to enter the 2006 Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage & Products Competition.

Entry forms are being sent out for the event, which takes place at The Cedar Court Hotel, Bradford on Sunday, 22 October.

Organised by The Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers Councils, this year's competition is set to be bigger and better than ever, it was claimed.

There is now no limit on the number of individual entries that can be made in all classes, while a new event this year is a special class for burgers, reflecting the new name of the contest.

Written appraisals are yet another innovation for 2006. Every entry in the competition will receive an appraisal, allowing entrants to see how judges have marked their entry and what comments they have made.

Also new this year is a trophy for the Reserve Supreme Pork Pie Champion - The Willis Hall Cup for Pork Pie Excellence. The late Yorkshire playwright was a great friend of the Great Yorkshire Competition, adjudicating on many occasions. He loved to judge and eat the pork pies and Mr Hall's widow Valerie has donated the new trophy in his memory. Organisers hope she will be present in person to present it for the first time.

The competition is open to both members and non-members of the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders (NFMFT). The closing date for entries is Saturday, 14 October.

The Confederation President's annual dinner dance will be held on the eve of the contest, Saturday, 21 October, at Cedar Court Hotel, featuring the renowned Joe Loss Orchestra.
