Why we shop at...
Flanagan's Butchers in Crawley, West Sussex
We shop here because we don't like the meat sold in supermarkets. We have travelled 10 miles to get here - we heard about this butcher's shop so we thought we'd try it. I like the service, it's good quality meat and it's quite tender - we especially like the ham and the sirloin. We probably come here once a month and we like to give the business to the independent butcher rather that the supermarkets.
Mr and Mrs Sutton of Crawley, bought a leg of lamb, and sausages.
It's friendly service that counts, especially when you live alone, it's nice to have a good chat with the staff. I am only visiting as I have family here but I always come to this shop when I am here. It's very good quality. I only buy meat at the supermarket if I am absolutely desperate.
Margaret Spilsted, 80, of Battle. She bought veal steaks, cooked ham and beef and some cheese.
There's good meat here and they have fun and friendly staff. I don't know whether it's any more expensive here than the supermarkets but I think we should support the local trade. I come to this butcher at least three times a week. I don't like the pre-packed meat you get in the supermarkets, whereas here, I can ask to have it cut how I like it.
Angela Parson, of Crawley Down.
I want fresh meat so I don't shop at the supermarkets that often. Here, they cut the meat to the size you want. I come about once a week, sometimes more in the summer months for their barbecue products.
Gwen Dobson of Turners Hill, West Sussex, bought mince, sausages, chicken breasts and lamb's livers.
It's a nice shop. The quality is great - the service especially and, of course, the meat. We come here mainly at the weekends to stock up. We mostly buy legs of lamb and steak.
Mr and Mrs Palmer, Crawley Down.
It's the best meat you can buy for miles around at this shop. I don't know another shop like it. I have lived in this village for 20 years and I have always shopped here - I don't buy meat from anywhere else. In the past I have tried buying meat from supermarkets but it was tough - I have never had tough meat from this shop though. I come here twice a week and sometimes more in the summer. I get fillet steaks and beef for the weekends as well as chicken breasts.
Sheila McGregor, Crawley Down, bought fillet steak and pate.
The meat here is better than any supermarket - it's fresher and it's local - it's far better than any of the processed packaged meat in supermarkets. I have always come to this butcher - I regularly buy ham and cheese and cooked meats for salads and sandwiches.
Mark Brazil, Crawley Down.
I prefer buying meat here than in the supermarkets - the meat is consistent and I know what I am getting at the end of the day. I suppose I am also of a generation more used to buying meat from a butcher's shop. There are some supermarkets that I will buy meat from but I come here once a week. I like the barbecue range.
Mrs Gould, of Turners Hill, bought chicken and sausages.
We come here because of the quality advice on specific cuts and buying into the knowledge of the butcher. We have only been here twice now, but we will definitely be back. You can also benefit from a proper butcher's experience when choosing your meat. We like the steaks. I have almost given up with cooking steaks from supermarkets as I have had some disasters with them before - they were so tough. I thought it was my cooking that was at fault. But after trying some steaks from here, I realised it was the quality that was the problem, not my cooking!
Carol and Stewart Marshall, Crawley, bought sirloin steaks, spare ribs, minted lamb kebabs, lamb chops and a dog bone.
It's a traditional shop - we love it here. We probably come here about once a week and we buy in bulk. I don't care if it's cheaper in the supermarkets, I would still come here.
Mrs Saunders, East Grinstead, bought mince, pork sausages, chicken breasts and a roll of stuffed ham.
I come here because this shop has got a very good reputation. I always find the staff cheerful and helpful. The personal part of it - even with the volume of customers they get - is very much appreciated.
Mrs Spalding, Crawley Down, bought chicken, ham, sausages and salami.
