SOUND INVESTMENT

When Anthony Dalzell found out Wokingham town centre was to undergo a £45m facelift, he decided his butcher's shop needed sprucing up a bit.

So like many other shop owners in the town, Anthony invested in a total refit, and decided to add a sandwich bar to fill the space in his shop where some old freezers had been cleared away.

Haighs butcher's shop on Pow Street now sells an impressive 700 sandwiches a day. "We've had to take on six extra staff," said Anthony, who cooks and prepares all the sandwich meat in-store.

"We do bacon, sausage, ham and turkey as well as cheese and tuna sandwiches," he said. "It's popular because we make them to order, so customers choose what they want."

The redevelopment of the town has been a bonus to both big-name stores and independent traders. "There are definitely more people in the town," said Anthony. A new Debenhams is due to open next month and the facades of Marks & Spencer, Iceland and Woolworth's have all been freshened up.

In the refit, Haighs was given new counters, a new ceiling and the shop front was also refitted. "Trade is up 15%," said Anthony, who is clearly enjoying the success of his sandwich bar.
