Pig abattoir clear of FMD says Defra
Tests on samples taken from pigs at an abattoir in Northern Ireland for foot-and-mouth disease have proved negative.
The tests were carried out following the discovery of foot lesions on a number pigs at the facility in County Antrim on Monday.
Movement restrictions and other measures had been imposed both at the abattoir and the site where the pigs had originated by Defra.
Chief veterinary officer Bert Houston said samples had been sent to the Institute for Animal Health in England for testing for foot-and-mouth disease and swine vesicular disease as a precautionary measure.
More than 50,000 animals were culled in the 2001 outbreak, most of them sheep and £7.5m was paid to Northern Ireland farmers in compensation.
