Cranstons takes all four gold awards
Cranstons of Cumbria stole the show at the 2006 Guild of Q Butchers National Barbecue Championships and Product Evaluation.
The firm, which has five shops in the Guild, won both the Supreme Individual Product Award and the team championship with a portfolio of four products which all won Gold Awards. Lamb Noisettes stuffed with Cumberland sausage meat with Stilton and smoked bacon won best individual product while the three other gold-winning team products were Mediterranean Style Burger, Pork Roulades and Turkey Citrus Satays.
Thirteen teams of butchers competed in the championships in Chepstow, South Wales, with judges headed by award-winning chef and television food presenter Franco Taruschio. He said: "The standards were most impressive and all the butchers present deserve enormous credit. It has been enlightening to see the imagination that has gone into the production and presentation of so many exciting barbecue ideas."
Other main awards were: Mexican Burger from H Coates & Son, Durham (Best Beef Burger); Pistol Pork Surprise from Allan Bennett Ltd, Wolverhampton (Best Pork Product); Tuscan Turkey Sausage from Allan Bennett Ltd, (Best Turkey Product); and Jerky Turkey Steak from J W Mettrick & Son Ltd, Glossop, Derbyshire (Most Innovative Product).
