Novel pie creation brings home the bacon in S East
BPEX EVALUATION EVENT
THE FINAL British Pig Executive (BPEX) product evaluation event in the South East saw a record-breaking 230 entries from 29 butchers and taking home five of the 10 category awards were four Surrey-based butchers.
Roy Bevan from Kingston-Upon-Thames was the Overall Champion with his Bacon, Grape and Brie Pie. He equalled the recent record set for gold awards, securing the highest standard against 13 of his products.
He said: "We triumphed today with my son's recipe - he's a fully qualified chef and now works along side me in the shop. We're thrilled to bits to say the least and the certificate and a photograph from the event will certainly be going up in the shop."
More awards went to Surrey butchers from Tolworth, Daryl Cylger and the Nigel Kingsley who scooped two category wins - Traditional pork sausage and home cured gammon. James Hawken from Coulsdon in Surrey said he was delighted to be crowned the Young Sausage Maker category champion. Supported by the Meat Training Council, the category was introduced earlier in the roadshow season to encourage young butchers who are new to the trade.
Keith Fisher, BPEX butchery and product development manager said BPEX was delighted with the turn out of both butchers and product entries. Overall, 128 products achieved gold awards 51 were awarded with a silver status and 13 bronze.
"Our congratulations go to all the participants as it was impressive to see so many high scoring entries - over 60 per cent took home gold awards. All six roadshows were a tremendous success but it was very encouraging to end on such a high note in the South East."
