Role of the farmer is emphasised

MANAGERS FROM Dewhurst Butchers reconnected with the supply chain during a series of special 'Supply Chain and Meat Quality Conferences' where they learnt about the vital role farmers play in producing EBLEX Quality Standard beef and lamb.

Terry Voss, operations director at Dewhurst Butchers, said: "Developed specifically for our shop managers, these 'gate to plate' conferences were designed to demonstrate to staff the benefits of becoming a member of the English Beef and Lamb Executive's Quality Standard scheme for beef and lamb."

During the day managers took part in butchery demonstrations covering specifications and quality control and attended presentations on farming techniques to learn about the benefits of sourcing from fully assured farms within the Quality Standard scheme.

Dick van Leeuwen of EBLEX was on hand to answer any questions relating to the EBLEX Quality Standard scheme whilst Andrew Maunder, of Lloyd Maunder highlighted the business benefits associated with membership of the scheme.

Mr Voss said: "These conferences have clearly demonstrated to our managers the role of the farmer in producing quality beef and lamb, emphasising how careful feeding regimes, breeding cycles and animal husbandry impact on the quality of meat - before it even arrives in our shops.

Our managers clearly understand how the Quality Standard scheme operates, the high standards it adheres to and, importantly, how this will benefit the Dewhurst customer."
