WALTER SMITH SCOOPS TOP PRIZES
A MIDLAND'S butcher triumphed at the recent Guild of Q Butchers' Smithfield Awards 2005 by taking home a host of awards in recognition of product excellence.
The Lichfield branch of Walter Smith Butcher's in Staffordshire, one of the company's three Guild of Q shops, scooped four golds and a number of other special awards including the Supreme Award for its Longboat of Lamb.
Manager of the shop, Nigel Rose, said: "I'm just over the moon. Out of all the awards I'm probably most proud of the Diamond Award for the short back bacon because, in the Midlands, it's a real hotbed of quality bacon and so to have won against others in the Midland's and against others nationally is great."
Managing Director of Walter Smith, Andrew Ayres said what the Lichfield branch had managed to achieve was fantastic.
"We seem to be going from strength to strength and this can only strengthen our position and reputation further within Lichfield. It's a tribute to the skill of the company. Nigel started with us as a part time boy and has gone on to become a very successful manager with fantastic meat skills."
The company has 30 shops throughout the Midlands stretching to the east as far as Derby and as far south as Coventry. Founded in Birmingham in 1885, Walter Smith subsequently moved to various locations and at one stage had its own cold store and factory. The offices are now based in Birmingham with Guild of Q shops located in Lichfield, Knowle and Stourbridge.
The company has a strong reputation for training with most senior managers and shop managers having come through the system. Walter Smith offers training courses for environmental health officers and meat recognition - something it will continue to develop, Mr Ayres said.
