Boost for award-winning butcher

A YORKSHIRE butcher is enjoying increased pork pie sales which have soared by over 50 per cent since winning a major award last year.

David Mounfield, who runs a family butchery business, JA Mounfield & Son at Bubwith, near Selby, won Yorkshire's best speciality product at the Great Taste Awards in September 2005, presented by the Guild of Fine Food Retailers in London.

As a diversification venture for the business, which has been trading for more than 100 years, David used his grandmother's recipe to produce the pies using meat sourced from genetically-advanced pigs bred by locally-based international pig-breeding company, ACMC of Beeford, near Driffield.

Formerly a pig buyer from the local market, David turned to ACMC when FMD interrupted supplies on the recommendation of a local farmer who was impressed with the quality of the breeding stock.

He now buys all his pigs from the company and most of them are used to make his pies which are sold in the shop and to butchers and retailers in the York, Selby and the Market Weighton area.

He said the pigs were now in demand all over Europe and as far away as America and Asia. He said he liked the fact that the pigs he bought were produced locally, so he could guarantee their quality. "Locally produced pies, traditionally made, from local pigs are our big selling points," David said.
