Sausage sales sizzling nicely

 - Published:  06 January, 2006

Sales of sausages reached a new high following the most successful British Sausage Week ever, according to latest market data from TNS Superpanel.

The research has shown that British Sausage Week is going from strength to strength with sausage sales this year reaching almost £11 million - up 11 per cent on sales the previous week in October. Sausage sales also continued to grow in the week following British Sausage Week.

Activities taking place during British Sausage Week involved pubs and restaurants, in addition to pupils and school caterers. Competitions incorporating colouring and imaginative poem-writing were the challenges handed to Key Stage One and Two pupils while caterers were invited to get creative in the kitchen. School cooks were asked to create a dish containing sausages or sausage meat which fitted the budgetary and nutritional guidelines for schools while being mindful of the Government's White Paper - Choosing Health. This meant that dishes could contain no additional salt, unnecessary fat and no sugar.

Catering butchers were at the same time urged to drive sausage sales during sausage week with special BPEX promotional kits. The new point-of-sale kit for caterers comprised an empty belly poster to advertise specials and promotions during the event. It came with colourful Sausage Week balloons and a recipe leaflet featuring five brand new delicious recipe ideas specially created for Sausage Week.

Tina Mulholland, said: "The huge success of British Sausage Week 2005 could not have been achieved without the support of all the independent butchers, multiple retailers, pubs and restaurants across the country. They all took advantage of the opportunity to boost sales and make the Week a success."
