Eating into the record books

The East of England Agricultural Society broke the record on Sunday (22 February), with 1,362 people tucking in to a Quality Standard British roast beef lunch at the East of England Showground in Peterborough.

The Quality Standard Beef used in the meal was donated by local farmers and Eblex and raised over £6,500 for army charity Help for Heroes. Falklands hero Simon Weston also gave a speech at the lunch.

Society chief executive Andrew Mercer said: "We were delighted by the number of people who supported us in this venture, both by helping us and by coming to eat on the day. There was a marvellous atmosphere and the food was superb. We would like to thank all our supporters, volunteers, and the suppliers who have donated goods to this worthwhile cause."

The Society made steps towards ensuring the record attempt had the finest beef possible by purchasing the reserve champion at last year's East of England Winter Stock Festival. The Chancer, a Limousin cross steer owned by Sharon and Phil Sellers from Belper, Derbyshire, also became reserve champion at the Royal Smithfield Christmas Fair.

Over 200 volunteers helped with serving the two course meal and guests were serenaded by music from the Air Force College band.
