NFU director general steps down
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) director general Richard Macdonald will stand down from his post later this year.
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) director general Richard Macdonald will stand down from his post later this year, according to an announcement made to the NFU's Council.
Macdonald has been the director general for nearly 13 years and said it was a huge privilege to hold the job, which he has greatly enjoyed, but now it was time for him to spend more time with the family.
"My decision has been difficult to reach but is entirely positive and I remain extremely committed to the NFU and farming - they are a large part of my life."
NFU president Peter Kendall paid tribute to Macdonald for all his work as director general and his association with the organisation for nearly 30 years.
He said: "His enthusiasm, drive and commitment to the industry will be sorely missed and we wish him all the best as he pursues other interests. However, I am looking forward to continuing working with him for the rest of the year."
The NFU will now be looking for a suitable replacement.
