KFC announces job creation

Through an investment of between £100-£150m, the growth plan is particularly aimed in the north of England and South Wales area which will also see it increase its franchise business and refurbish current premises.

KFC UK chief executive officer Martin Shuker said: "There aren't many companies who can be so positive in this market so we are delighted to be able to announce this significant investment in the UK.

"Our growth strategy demonstrates the strong demand from our customers; consumers clearly still want great quality food but at reasonable prices and that is exactly what we provide."

Despite an economic downturn, KFC said it is continuing to see strong sales with results for 2008 up 6% from the year before and figures already for 2009 showing a 14% increase so far. A drive thru store opened in Worcester in January saw record first week takings of £100,000.

The chain currently has 760 stores in the UK and Ireland employing 20,000 people and has recently announced an initiative to reduce packaging by 1,4000 tonnes as well as publishing a nutritional profile of its menu through the Food Standards Agency.
