Bernard Matthews unveils windpower plan

Bernard Matthews has unveiled plans for a series of wind turbines to provide electricity for its plants in East Anglia.

The nine proposed turbines, costing £20m, would provide a quarter of the company's energy requirements. The proposals will now go before local planning authorities for consideration.

If plans go ahead, there would be five turbines built at Holton in Suffolk, two turbines close to an existing windfarm at North Pickenham in mid-Norfolk and two next to the Bernard Matthews' HQ at Weston Longville near Norwich.

Bernard Matthews director Matt Pullen commented: "It's all part of the business moving and looking forward. Sustainability has to be central to our business strategy, so it makes absolute sense to do this. It has been looked at for quite a long time, but it takes time for things to come to fruition.

"Is this about us being the greenest company we can be? This is just the responsible thing for any company to do."

If planning permission is granted, the first turbine could be generating power by 2010.
