Tourists break pork taboo

Pork is taboo for India's 140m Muslims, and the Hindu majority avoid eating beef.

Both meats are hard to find; instead chicken and goat are widely eaten.

A city official was quoted in the Hindustan Times: "Though we issue licenses for selling pork at meat shops, the city does not have any abattoir for slaughtering pigs."

However, pork is available for people prepared to do the work themselves.

"Anyone can slaughter a pig at their house after paying a token charge of two rupees," the official said.
