Higher welfare chickens sales have soared in the past year despite desperate economic conditions, claimed Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) in a new commissioned survey.
Higher welfare chickens sales have soared in the past year despite desperate economic conditions, according to a new survey from Compassion in World Farming (CIWF)
The survey, carried out by TNS, revealed that between December 2007 and December 2008, free-range chicken sales alone increased by 35%, while sales of higher-welfare chicken meat, including higher welfare indoor systems, grew by 42%.
Results also showed that sales of standard fresh chicken decreased steadily over the year. In December, consumption of standard chicken dropped by 11% compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, at Tesco in December 2008, the sales value of standard chicken was 55% lower than in the corresponding period in the previous year.
CIWF said the figures show that consumers care about animal welfare and are ready to pay a little bit more for it despite the recession.
The animal charity is now backing the Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall campaign 'Chicken Out!' which is calling for more honest labelling on chicken packaging.
