ABP appoints new MD
Richard Cracknell is to step down as managing director of Anglo Beef Processors (ABP).
Tom Kirwan, formerly head of ABP's Frozen and Convenience Food Division, has been appointed to replace Cracknell, with effect from 1 April 2009.
Cracknell, who has been ABP's MD since its inception in 1986, has steered the group through turbulent times, including BSE and two foot-and-mouth epidemics. He has also played a vital role in the wider industry, spending time as commissioner of the Meat & Livestock Commission and chairman of the British Meat Federation. He will remain as vice-chairman of ABP in a non-executive capacity.
Kirwan joined the Anglo Irish Beef Processors Group in 1982, where he was a senior executive at the Cahir beef processing plant in Ireland. He moved to ABP in 1990 to head up Wessex Foods in Lowestoft, which is one of the UK's leading fresh and frozen burger producers, before growing the Frozen and Convenience Food Division, with additional operations in Liverpool, Glasgow and Tunbridge Wells.
