Eire shoppers boost Sainsbury's sales
Consumers from Southern Ireland have been boosting sales at Sainsbury's stores in Northern Ireland.
The strong Euro has seen shoppers pouring into Sainsbury's Newry outlet over the last six to nine months. But now with the weak pound and Christmas this week it is rumoured that the 30,000 sq ft store has seen its sales soar from £500,000 a week to £2.7 million a week.
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury's said: "This is not a surprise for us. We have seen this trend taking place for some time. The pound is even weaker and it is better value with the recent VAT reduction and it being Christmas so we are seeing even more shoppers from across the border coming to our store."
