Andrew Maunder of 2 Sisters Willand, formerly Lloyd Maunder, has been presented with an award in recognition of his work with opinion-formers of all kinds, to promote the British chicken sector.

He was given his award by Ted Wright, chairman of the British Poultry Council (BPC), at the BPC's Annual Awards at the House of Commons this week.

The first BPC Scholarship Award was given to Richard Bailey at the Institute of Food Research, University of East Anglia, who is undertaking a PhD as a CASE student, with Aviagen as his industrial partner. The second scholarship went to Dr Tracey Jones at the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford.

The Awards for Distinguished Services to the Poultry Industry went to Colin Aves of Paul Flatman, Ian Harrison of Harrison's Poultry and John Preston of Faccenda.

Colin Thompson was presented with a new scholarship, the Charles Longley Award in recognition of his work with the University of Lincoln in Primary Food Production.

The Poultry Industry Special Award was presented Peter Hewson, veterinary director with the Food Standards Agency. Wright said of Hewson, "Although he is a vet, Peter is also a good bloke. He has been quietly persistent and effective in his pursuit of sound policy development. He knows us well and we, and the larger public interests, have been well-served by him. Peter's commitment and unfailing reputation across the UK industry are rightly rewarded today."
