Yorkshire sausage makers, debbie & andrew's, have been giving customers and celebrities a sneak preview of their new veal sausages.
With veal growing in popularity, Debbie and Andrew Keeble, the Thirsk-based farmers behind the award-winning company, took their sausages to the Country Living Fayre in London recently where they got the thumbs up from hundreds of visitors.
Passionate about animal welfare and good quality meat, the new veal sausages are part of the couple's campaign to get veal back on British menus. Celebrity foodies and veal supporters, Janet Street Porter and John Torode have also been sent some sausages to try*.
Wary of over-creative recipes, the debbie & andrew's sausages are a simple mix of equal veal, chicken and lean pork shoulder plus shallots, cream, salt, pepper and nutmeg in natural casings.
Debbie Keeble said: "We totally support getting British veal back onto the menu. We are prepared to eat lamb but shun veal which seems absurd because it's a good, low-fat meat. British calves are reared to much higher welfare standards than the rest of Europe and the more veal we eat in this country, the more incentive there will be for farmers here to rear their own animals which could stop thousands of unwanted calves being killed at birth.
"When we took our sausages to Country Living we expected some negative comments, but everyone who tried them loved them and supported us in our aims. Now, with animal welfare organisations and top chefs endorsing veal again, we hope more people will start to enjoy it without the guilt."
The duo will be sampling their new veal sausages to more customers in the run up to Christmas. They also plan to talk to general and gourmet retailers about stocking the sausages in the New Year.
