Industry takes Fight over Sheep EID to Paris
European sheep industry representatives held a demonstration in Paris last week to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by Continental producers.
The demonstration took place last Thursday, ahead of a Council of Ministers meeting regarding compulsory electronic sheep tagging. It was attended by a number of European industry organisations, including NFU livestock board member Howard Bates.
Bates, who took part in a round-table discussion with the president of the Copa-Cogeca working party on sheep meat following the demonstration, said: "This was the latest round in the fight over the introduction of compulsory electronic sheep tagging and individual movement traceability across the EU. I made it clear the NFU is continuing to do all it can to try and overturn this regulation and the Germans and Dutch have come out strongly in backing our campaign.
"We are concerned about the impact this regulation will have on an already beleaguered industry and we felt it was important to demonstrate our commitment to work with all the major sheep-producing countries of Europe to look at ways to provide a sustainable and profitable sheep industry."
