The owner of a Midlands fast food restaurant has been fined a total of £3,700 after he sold under-cooked chicken and pies covered in mould.
Gurmail Bhandal, 49, of the Green Lanes Chippy, Bilston, admitted selling food of poor quality, selling food past its sell-by date and selling food not fit for human consumption when he appeared before Wolverhampton magistrates. The court heard that one woman bought a meat and potato Pukka pie, but when she got it home and took the top off it she discovered mould inside.
Another customer complained that the chicken she had been served was almost raw.
Health inspectors also found burger buns stored on the same level of the fridge as raw meat.
The counter where cooked food was kept hot was also found to be at 53°C when the legal requirement to avoid contamination is 63°C.
Bhandal admitted that he had only recently taken over the business and had not taken a food hygiene course.
In mitigation, it was said that Bhandal had now taken a food hygiene course and was complying with all regulations. He was fined £2,300, with £1,400 costs.
