Interpack delegates focus on food loss reduction

Packaging companies will discuss solutions to reduce waste along
the food value chain at the next Interpack trade fair, due to take place in Düsseldorf from 8 to 14 May 2014.
The SAVE FOOD initiative, a co-operation between the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Messe Düsseldorf, gathers packaging
designers and food industry leaders together to come up with solutions
to reduce food loss. Proposals will
be presented at Interpack’s Innovationparc Packaging.

“The branches of industry concerned with food, packaging and logistics play a very special role in the SAVE FOOD scheme. Ultimately, it is the products developed by these companies that serve as the germinal ideas for
concrete solutions. SAVE FOOD is to act as a kind of catalyst, so that even more can be made of these ideas through contact with other companies and organisations,” said Interpack director Bernd Jablonowski.

The initiative started at Interpack 2011, with a congress revolving around global food loss, that attracted over
300 international participants. Delegates and speakers, from producers and the packaging industry to retailers, as well as political representatives – including German federal minister
Ilse Aigner, social groups and
non-government organisations (NGOs), participated in the dialogue.

Since the beginning of 2012, the SAVE FOOD initiative has been open
to companies and private individuals who wish to support it financially
or contribute ideas.
Messe Düsseldorf said: “Along with companies from the packaging
industry, virtually all the leading
trade associations of the sector have already signed up.”
