Hampshire butchers reign supreme
Hampshire butchers carried the day against their Berkshire and Oxfordshire competitors in the recent Three Counties Sausage and Pie Competition.
Manydown Farm at Basingstoke was awarded Supreme Pie Champion, and won both Best Hot Eating Pie category for its lamb and mint pie, as well as the Best Traditional Pork Pie category; Greenfield Pork of Andover won the Speciality Pork Sausage category for its ‘Abbots Ann Special’ sausage; Uptons of Bassett in Southampton won the Speciality Cold Pie category with its pork, apple and brandy pie; and Wellington Farm Shop at Hook won the Lamb or Beef Sausage category with its lamb, mint and rosemary sausage.
A total of 20 butchers from the three counties entered 135 products into the competition, which was held in Streatley, Berkshire, and sponsored by The Swan at Streatley on Thames, Bpex, South England Pastries and Lucas Ingredients.
Mark Drummond, of Manydown Farm, said: “It’s great that these awards reflect the high standard of Hampshire’s producers and the top quality of our products. Manydown Farm Shop was very pleased to have come out on top as Supreme Pie Champion!”
All of Hampshire’s winning butchers are members of county food group Hampshire Fare, and chairman Mike Wright said: “Hampshire has a strong reputation for the high quality of its sausages and pies, produced by artisan butchers who care about the provenance of their ingredients. Buying from your independent butcher and farm shop ensures that you not only have a great tasting meal, but that these go-ahead businesses continue to thrive.”
