Vion sells plant to Morrisons
Vion Food has announced plans to sell its Winsford processing operations to Morrisons.
The deal will see the Cheshire-based meat processing site and all staff transfer to Farmers Boy Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Morrisons.
In a statement, the company said: “Vion has extensive secondary processing and packing operations across the UK and production at the site will transfer to other Vion UK facilities. This will deliver enhanced operational efficiencies, and will ensure that Vion’s packing resources are better aligned to current and anticipated market demand.
“Importantly, Wm Morrison Supermarkets is a respected and highly successful company, and the proposed sale will provide for continuity and job security for the Winsford workforce.”
The company added that the deal was expected to be complete on or around 27 March.
Morrisons said the purchase of the 105,000 sq ft fresh pork and lamb retail packing plant was the latest in a number of transactions the company was making to strengthen its manufacturing facilities. The plant also has the capability to expand into beef products as well.
Martyn Fletcher, Morrisons group manufacturing director, said: “Owning the manufacturing sites that produce our fresh food is crucial to Morrisons because it ensures we can control quality and keep down costs for our customers.
“As Morrisons continues to grow, it is important we have the facilities to support us. This facility is a high quality, purpose built meat processing factory and will be an ideal addition to the fantastic manufacturing sites we already own.”
