Eblex appoints 3 new board members

Eblex chairman John Cross said: “Gwyn, Paul and Howard are welcome appointments to the EBLEX board and their experience and skills will complement the expertise we have already. Their skill sets will help underpin Eblex’s strategic direction and meet the challenges the industry faces. I’m looking forward to working closely with them and wish them every success.”

Gwyn Williams is a member of Defra’s panel of approved valuers of livestock for notifiable diseases, and chairman of the Livestock Auctioneers Association. He was born and raised on a dairy, beef and sheep farm  and has 36 years of experience in livestock marketing.

He said: “I’m looking forward to bringing all of the knowledge I have gained in livestock production, marketing and farm budgeting to the table. I’m also looking forward to helping communicate to the farming industry what EBLEX does and to give a livestock markets perspective on the industry, particularly in relation to movements issues.”

Paul Westaway has a butchery background and now run a 230- head farm in Gloucestershire with his wife. “I have a background of working in large organisations and am very excited to be joining the EBLEX board. My generation of beef farmers has a fantastic opportunity, but we need to be market-led and use every bit of science available to help drive that potential success forward,” he said.

Howard Bates contributed to Eblex’s ‘Landscapes without Livestock’ project examining how the decline of livestock herds could impact England’s landscapes. He is a seventh generation farmer from Kent, who worked in New Zealand and in The Royal Navy.  

“I’m very much a traditional working sheep farmer and have also been heavily involved in higher level agri-environmental schemes. I’m looking forward to working as a board member and to help further its aims to support a sustainable and profitable industry, from grass field to plate,” Bates said.
