Tulip to close Wirral plant

Leading meat processor Tulip is to shut its plant in Birkenhead, with the potential loss of 218 jobs.
The company stated that the cooked meat plant, which it acquired in November 2011 when it bought the Parkam Food Group, was “unable to address a number of operational and technical issues” at the loss-making facility and it would take too much of investment to bring it up to standard.
Tulip acquired Transfood along with Parkam Foods, Trophy Foods, and Freshway Foods – in order to gain entry into the beef and poultry markets. As recently as last month, Tulip was insisting that it was business as usual for the staff at Parkam Foods.
Chief operating officer Peter Judge said: “Given the current over-capacity in the market and the prevailing economic climate, we do not believe there is a viable alternative other than the proposed closure of the site.”
