Meat wholesaler signs foodservice supply deal

The award-winning wholesaler started to supply gourmet sausages and bacon racks to the Sir John Fitzgerald Group, a family-run company which operates around 20 upmarket, contemporary and traditional pub restaurants, in December.

Since then, the Fitzgerald Group has expanded its demand to include fresh pork and beef burgers, making the bacon rack a signature dish in its restaurants.

The contract comes after a targeted marketing campaign to further Hannan’s reach into the north east. A delegation of chefs from the area visited Hannan’s processing operations in Moira, Northern Ireland last year and, in September, the company established a branch of deli and farm shop The Meat Merchant in the affluent Newcastle suburb of Jesmond.

Peter Hannan, managing director of Hannan Meats, said: “Our business is booming in the region because top chefs there now recognise that we offer them a exceptional range of quality and richly flavoured meat products, especially our Hereford and Shorthorn beef, bacon racks and pork chops.

“The sausages are a relatively new development for us. What we have done is to use our experience in meat processing to create new and distinctively rich flavours, which seem to have captured the attention of chefs, diners and, increasingly, shoppers at our Meat Merchant store in Newcastle city centre.

“In particular our spicy Italian sausage, winner in a recent awards competition for innovative meat products, is proving immensely popular with Newcastle’s large Italian community.”
