Scottish beef associations join forces on CAP
The National Beef Association (NBA) Scotland is holding a meeting on CAP reform this week and has invited members of the Scottish Beef Cattle Association to participate, in the first move to unite the two bodies which represent beef farmers in Scotland.
The meeting, which will take place at Stirling Mart on Wednesday 11 January, will discuss the ways in which the beef sector in Scotland needs to engage with the Scottish government to secure a fair deal for producers on CAP reform.
Last month the two organisations announced that their intention to join forces to form one independent body with a single voice to promote the interests of Scotland’s beef producers in Edinburgh, London and Brussels. The chairman of the Scottish Beef Cattle Association wrote an open letter to beef farmers asking for their support.
Hamish McBean, chairman of the NBA and NBA Scotland, said: “We’re all in favour of a single body in Scotland, as that is the best way to represent beef producers and strengthen the beef sector. CAP is a prime example of that, as it is the biggest threat facing beef farmers at the moment, and next week’s meeting will be vital.
“I’m committed to moving forward as a single body. However, that single body must be linked to the NBA in some way, as we will be stronger if we are part of a national organisation. Yes, policy can and should be different when appropriate, as we will operate as a separate and Scotland-specific body – but there must be an NBA link for us to agree to any change.”
